Tell them you care, but suggest they talk to a trusted adultA parent, teacher, counselor, or other grown-up you can go to when something online (or offline) feels uncomfortable or unsafe. or hotline.
Offering support while still setting limits is a healthy way to care. You don’t ignore the problem but, you redirect it to someone who can help.
Say something like:
- “I care about you, but I think you should talk to someone who can really help.”
- This lets them know you’re not walking away but rather helping them take the next step.
- “You matter. Let’s find someone who can support you better than I can.”
- You’re showing that their feelings are important, but you also know your limits.
This is what healthy support looks like: caring with boundaries.
